Study: Healthy Kids Saves Funds

Tina Jackson enrolled her daughter, Kyana, in the Healthy Kids program after Tina lost her job. A University of Southern California study of children’s health initiatives released this week found the program saves the state and federal government up to $7.3 million annually in health care costs by preventing more than 1,000 unnecessary child hospitalizations each year.

Peninsula Health Groups get $2.8M in grants

Nine San Mateo County health groups received $2.8 million in much-needed funding from the Peninsula Health Care District on Thursday.

The district bestowed its 2009 community health grants to the Children’s Health Initiative, College of San Mateo nursing program and others. The district collects taxes from the area stretching roughly from Foster City to San Bruno and distributes a new round of grants near the beginning of each year. The new contributions bring the district’s commitment in grants during the next four years to $4 million.

The Children’s Health Initiative grant helps provide medical insurance to needy families while the nursing grant will pay for two years of instruction for a 12-student cohort.

Also receiving money were the Community Health Network for the Underserved, a seniors in home program from Jewish Family and Children’s Services, and ombudsman services for the area’s long-term care facilities.

In addition, Palcare Childcare Center Nutrition Programs, the Samaritan House, the Mills-Peninsula Senior Focus Program, and Youth and Family Enrichment Services all received funding from the health care district.

The money was given at a special presentation in Burlingame on Thursday night, which was attended by U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Hillsborough, state Assemblyman Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, and county Supervisor Carole Groom, among others.
